Waterford Whisky Deconstruction Tasting

A chairde,

It's that time of the month again and this time the committee are delighted to welcome Ned Gahan, Head Distiller with Waterford Distillery, to present a deconstruction of one of their latest Single Farm Origin releases.

Mark Reynier, owner of Waterford Distillery, bought an old Diageo brewery back in 2014, with the intention of proving to the world that Terroir existed in whisky. Drawing from his unfinished business in Bruichladdich Distillery in Islay and his roots in the wine industry, he has been on a mission to shake the status quo in Irish whisk(e)y! He believes that by keeping each farms crop of barley separate during storage and distilling, he can prove that the land has a far greater influence on the final taste in the bottle. He has certainly created waves in the whiskey industry since the first release almost 15 months ago.

We have put together this deep dive into the 4 components that make up each Single Farm Origin whisky, to try get a better understanding of the Waterford project. Each SFO release has the same proportion of the 4 cask types, so this will be a very interesting exploration.

In addition, we have also lined up a very special whisky to taste on the night, which I'm sure you will be excited to try.

Ned Gahan has been with the project from the start, so who better to guide us through the tasting.

The flight of 6 whiskys on the night will be:

  • First fill bourbon 50% component
  • Virgin US oak 20% component
  • French oak 15% component
  • VDN 15% component (fortified wine)
  • Single Farm Origin Release (of the 4 components)
  • Very Special Release to be revealed on the night

This tasting will take place on ZOOM on Friday 25th June at 8pm.

An email with Zoom access details will be sent to all CWS members at 6pm on 25th June, just before we start.

Registration will be open from 7pm on Wednesday 9th June

Please log in to your members page on the CWS website to register. To those who are not lucky enough to get a tasting pack, you are still welcome to attend the Zoom tasting on the night.

We will also have 10 very special guests joining us from the Waterford Whiskey Society. It is our first collaboration with another society and an initiative we hope to expand in the future, on other projects.

Is mise le meas,

Laurie

Secretary Cork Whiskey Society
